Key takeaway
3D Projection Mapping for Siliguri’s biggest events
Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.
The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Siliguri that plays out at venues like Cinnamon Siliguri, Kanchenjunga Stadium, Mayfair Siliguri, and across Sevoke Road, Hill Cart Road, Matigara, Pradhan Nagar.
Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.

Local conditions
Producing 3D projection mapping in Siliguri
Weather & the rig
Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. Three distinct hazards. Jun–Sep brings Himalayan foothill rain of 2,500 mm-plus with the Mahananda and Teesta running high and Sevoke Road waterlogging. Nov–Jan brings dense Dooars fog that closes Bagdogra for hours and destroys any projection or aerial plan. Worst for a build is Apr–May, when Kalbaishakhi squall lines arrive off the plains with twenty minutes' warning and 60–70 km/h gusts — the single biggest cause of collapsed outdoor structures in north Bengal. Jun–Sep monsoon with its landslide closures on the hill routes; and Apr–May squall season for any outdoor build without a wind plan.
Power & redundancy
Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. WBSEDCL supply has frequent short interruptions and noticeable voltage swing through the wholesale and Sevoke Road belt, so DG with automatic voltage regulation is standard and a stabiliser ahead of LED processors is sensible. Tea-garden and Dooars-edge venues are entirely generator-fed, with fuel carried in because the estate roads make a mid-show bowser run unrealistic.
Permits & noise rules
Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. Siliguri Municipal Corporation for the licence and temporary-structure permission, the Siliguri Police Commissionerate for the public-performance and loudspeaker licence, and West Bengal Pollution Control Board noise rules with the 10 pm outdoor limit — Bengal's enforcement spikes around Kali Puja and Diwali, when the sound-box crackdown is active and genuine. Bagdogra is a civil enclave on an Air Force base 13 km out, which effectively closes drone operations. International-border proximity means the district administration expects intimation for any large gathering.
Load-in & access
Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. Siliguri is unusually easy to supply for its size because NJP railhead and Bagdogra air cargo both work — Kolkata is 560 km and 11–12 hours, so heavy LED and truss generally rail or fly rather than drive. Onward hill work is the hard part: NH-10 along the Teesta towards Kalimpong and Gangtok has landslide closures and a practical vehicle-length limit, and the Darjeeling road needs small trucks and tempo travellers only. Plan a transfer at Siliguri rather than a through-run.
Season & booking
Durga Puja and Kali Puja in Sep–Oct are absolute — every sound box, dimmer, truss span and technician in the district is committed to pandals for a fortnight, and anything else booked in that window will not be serviced. The Christmas–New Year hill-tourist peak locks accommodation and vehicles. Add the Teesta Tea and Tourism Festival, Saraswati Puja in Jan–Feb, and the Bengali wedding dates clustered in Agrahayan and Magh. Peak demand runs Oct–Mar.
Crew & dispatch
Local crew with working stock in Siliguri; large-format LED and specialist inventory railed to NJP or flown into Bagdogra from Kolkata rather than driven, with at least 48 hours in hand for the handover. Load-in support covers Pradhan Nagar, Champasari and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
Trading-family weddings pay well for visible spend — stage, floral, LED and entry — and negotiate hard on crew days and infrastructure. Tea-industry and corporate roadshow work is modest in value but reliably repeating across a season. The cost of getting gear here at all has to sit honestly in the quote, because freight and the hill transfer are not absorbable.
Local expectations
A genuinely mixed market — Marwari weddings run a long multi-day sequence with sangeet at full volume, Bengali weddings keep the shehnai, conch and uludhwani in acoustic space, and both expect the curfew honoured because Bengal police act on it. Pandal work answers to a puja committee, so the plan is presented to a room. Bengali and Hindi announcements with Nepali recognised in the hill-adjacent crowd.

On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues
Where we work in Siliguri
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Cinnamon Siliguri | Up to 900 seated across banquet halls | Sevoke Road property with a workable approach but no real dock — unloading happens on the service side of a busy arterial, and the hall's beam-to-slab gap keeps the lighting trim low. |
| Kanchenjunga Stadium | 20,000-plus with the field in use | The city's main large-crowd venue, right in the centre: no permanent rigging, turf and track protection needed before any vehicle crosses, a single usable service gate, and a surrounding commercial block where the approach jams solid by 9 am. |
| Mayfair Siliguri | Up to 800 across ballroom and lawns | Resort-format property on the Matigara side with lawn space and parking; the open lawn is exposed to the pre-monsoon squall line, so anything tall here needs guying and a wind-abort trigger written into the plan. |
| Sinclairs Siliguri | Up to 500 seated across halls | Established Pradhan Nagar hotel sized for conferences and mid-scale receptions; load-in is lift-based from a tight forecourt and parking is the practical limit on how many vehicles can be on site at once. |
| Tea-garden and Dooars-edge venues | 300–1,500 depending on the estate | The estate bungalow-and-lawn settings that destination clients ask for sit outside the municipal supply area entirely, so they are DG-only, the estate roads will not take a heavy truck after rain, and the Forest Department takes an interest wherever the plot abuts an elephant corridor. |

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
Content is authored before projector positions are fixed, so the animation does not sit on the geometry.
How we prevent itContent production does not begin until the projector study is signed off, because the mapping is authored against those exact camera positions.
- What can go wrong
A projector tower settles overnight in soft ground and the whole blend is out by morning.
How we prevent itTowers are built on load-spreading base plates, ballasted, and positions are physically marked so a realignment check before each show takes minutes.
- What can go wrong
Dust and heat in an outdoor enclosure cause thermal shutdown mid-show.
How we prevent itIP-rated enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling, filters changed daily on a multi-night run, and internal temperature logged during rehearsal.
- What can go wrong
Brightness is calculated from lumens alone and the dark stone façade swallows the image.
How we prevent itThe calculation includes measured surface reflectance, not an assumed figure, and a test projection on the actual material is done at survey wherever access allows.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Stock content instead of bespoke animationOur verdict
Stock loops and generative visuals genuinely work for ambient architectural washes and for leaner budgets. They cannot do a reveal, a narrative or anything that respects the building's actual architecture, because they are not authored to your geometry.
- Fewer, brighter projectors instead of more unitsOur verdict
Fewer angles means fewer blends and a faster alignment, which is the right trade on a flat surface. Any building with depth, recesses or wings needs multiple angles regardless of total lumens, or the recesses stay dark.
- Architectural lighting instead of mappingOur verdict
For a façade that only needs to look beautiful, uplighting and colour washes cost a fraction, go up in a day and work in light rain. Mapping is for when the building has to perform rather than just glow.
