3D Projection Mapping in Pune

The gap between adequate and excellent 3D projection mapping in Pune is usually preparation: msedcl supply in the city is stable and fails predictably rather than randomly, with scheduled maintenance outages that can be planned around, and the hinjewadi it park feeders are robust. moshi, the farm venues and the mulshi belt are dg-primary. maharashtra's acoustic-enclosure requirement and the 10pm cut apply exactly as in mumbai, with the state's notified festival nights the only exception, and a recce that finds the venue's real constraints before quote stage.

Key takeaway

3D Projection Mapping in Pune is quoted against your guest count, venue and run of show. Pune draws on the same western-India supplier pool as Mumbai with lower crew and cartage costs, which makes it the best value in the region for a metro-grade rig. Hinjewadi corporate buyers expect Bengaluru-standard documentation at Pune rates and will say so. Ganesh Chaturthi's ten days make Pune the heaviest AV-consuming city in the state after Mumbai, with the major mandals commissioning trussing, line arrays, lighting and generators city-wide and the immersion procession closing the central roads entirely. The Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav in December takes the best audio crews in the city, Pune Festival runs alongside Ganpati, and the college festival season from January to February books concert inventory — so we quote within 24 hours and hold dates first-come.

3D Projection Mapping for Pune’s biggest events

Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.

The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Pune that plays out at venues like Pune International Exhibition Centre, JW Marriott Pune, Balewadi Stadium, and across Hinjewadi, Koregaon Park, Baner, Kharadi.

Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.

Local conditions

Producing 3D projection mapping in Pune

Weather & the rig

Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. Sitting at 560m in the Deccan rain shadow, Pune has the most benign winter working conditions in Maharashtra — 8–12°C December nights that are dry and still, which is why outdoor builds here need less weather contingency than Mumbai's. The exception is anything west of the city: Mulshi, Lavasa and the Lonavala-side destination venues catch Western Ghats weather, with July and August rainfall and wind well beyond what the city forecast shows. March to May afternoons reach 40°C and the construction dust along the Hinjewadi and Katraj corridors loads fixture filters quickly. Jun–Sep monsoon, with the caveat that the Ghats-side venues are unusable a good fortnight either side of what the city's own rainfall suggests; and Aug–Sep Ganpati, when nothing is available at any price.

Power & redundancy

Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. MSEDCL supply in the city is stable and fails predictably rather than randomly, with scheduled maintenance outages that can be planned around, and the Hinjewadi IT park feeders are robust. Moshi, the farm venues and the Mulshi belt are DG-primary. Maharashtra's acoustic-enclosure requirement and the 10pm cut apply exactly as in Mumbai, with the state's notified festival nights the only exception.

Permits & noise rules

Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. Which body you approach depends on which side of the Mula-Mutha the venue sits: PMC for the city, PCMC for Pimpri-Chinchwad and Moshi, and the Collector or Gram Panchayat route for the Mulshi and Lavasa venues outside both. The Pune Police Commissionerate licenses amplified sound and gatherings, and MPCB's standards apply. Pune Cantonment and Khadki have their own boards with separate approvals. Drone work is harder than the city's profile suggests because Lohegaon is an Air Force station, which puts a firm restriction over the eastern half of the city.

Load-in & access

Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. Moshi is the easy one, straight off the highway. The real bottlenecks are the Expressway descent into Katraj and the Chandni Chowk junction, which can add two hours to a Mumbai run without warning, and the Peth quarter — Sadashiv Peth, Laxmi Road, Shaniwar Peth — where lanes are around three metres wide and a tempo is the largest vehicle that will physically pass. Daytime heavy-vehicle restrictions apply on city roads.

Season & booking

Ganesh Chaturthi's ten days make Pune the heaviest AV-consuming city in the state after Mumbai, with the major mandals commissioning trussing, line arrays, lighting and generators city-wide and the immersion procession closing the central roads entirely. The Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav in December takes the best audio crews in the city, Pune Festival runs alongside Ganpati, and the college festival season from January to February books concert inventory. Peak demand runs Oct–Mar.

Crew & dispatch

Served from the Pune base with the Mumbai depot three hours away on the Expressway as a working backup, which makes a mid-show spares run genuinely feasible. Load-in support covers Hadapsar, Hinjewadi and the rest of the city.

What it costs here

Pune draws on the same western-India supplier pool as Mumbai with lower crew and cartage costs, which makes it the best value in the region for a metro-grade rig. Hinjewadi corporate buyers expect Bengaluru-standard documentation at Pune rates and will say so.

Local expectations

Marathi-first compering is expected for public, mandal and institutional events, and the city's classical music audience is informed enough that an uncoloured PA and a low-noise stage matter more than any visual treatment. Mandal work has its own politics — the committee decides, not the event manager — and the corporate side in Hinjewadi mirrors Bengaluru's formality on process while running tighter on budget.

On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues

Where we work in Pune

VenueCapacityProduction note
Pune International Exhibition CentreSeveral thousand per hall across the Moshi complexDrive-in halls straight off the Nashik highway make the build simple, but the site is 20km north of the city, so crew accommodation and shuttle logistics sit in Pimpri-Chinchwad and the day starts earlier than the call sheet suggests.
JW Marriott PuneAround 1,200 banquet in the grand ballroomProper rigging points and a working dock make it the strongest hotel build in the city, but Senapati Bapat Road's traffic means the trucks come in overnight and the dock is shared with hotel operations.
Balewadi StadiumAround 20,000 in the athletics bowl with indoor halls alongsideSports Authority approval runs on its own timeline, the track and field need complete protection boarding, there is no roof rigging, and the entire site is generated.
Ganesh Kala Krida ManchAround 5,000 under cover at SwargateA large covered amphitheatre with limited structural rigging capacity, so the design is tower-based and the open sides mean wind and rain ingress have to be accounted for even though it reads as an indoor venue.
Sheraton Grand PuneAround 800 banquet across the ballroomBund Garden location with a constrained service approach, so cases are broken down to lift dimensions before they leave the warehouse.

Crew

Who turns up on show day

  • Mapping technician

Builds the geometry model, warps each projector to the surface and maintains alignment across the run.

  • Media server operator

Runs disguise, Pixera or Watchout, holds the show timeline to timecode and keeps a mirrored backup server.

  • Content artist

Authors the animation against the UV-mapped geometry so it reads correctly from the audience viewing position.

  • Projector technician

Rigs, powers, focuses and cools each unit, monitors lamp or laser hours and swaps a failed unit without losing alignment.

  • Rigger

Builds and ballasts the projector towers, secures positions against wind and marks them for repeatable realignment.

What you receive

  • 3D geometry model of the mapped surface with the UV layout
  • Projector placement study with throw, brightness and coverage calculations
  • Master render of the show content at delivery resolution
  • Media server show file with timecode cues and a mirrored backup
  • Masking map showing every excluded window, balcony and dark zone
  • Audio stem and mixed show track used for synchronisation

Risk control

What goes wrong, and how we stop it

  • What can go wrong

Content is authored before projector positions are fixed, so the animation does not sit on the geometry.

    How we prevent it

Content production does not begin until the projector study is signed off, because the mapping is authored against those exact camera positions.

  • What can go wrong

A projector tower settles overnight in soft ground and the whole blend is out by morning.

    How we prevent it

Towers are built on load-spreading base plates, ballasted, and positions are physically marked so a realignment check before each show takes minutes.

  • What can go wrong

Dust and heat in an outdoor enclosure cause thermal shutdown mid-show.

    How we prevent it

IP-rated enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling, filters changed daily on a multi-night run, and internal temperature logged during rehearsal.

  • What can go wrong

Brightness is calculated from lumens alone and the dark stone façade swallows the image.

    How we prevent it

The calculation includes measured surface reflectance, not an assumed figure, and a test projection on the actual material is done at survey wherever access allows.

Honest comparison

Is this the right choice for your event?

  • Architectural lighting instead of mapping
    Our verdict

For a façade that only needs to look beautiful, uplighting and colour washes cost a fraction, go up in a day and work in light rain. Mapping is for when the building has to perform rather than just glow.

  • LED wall instead of projection mapping
    Our verdict

LED beats projection on brightness, on reliability and in any lit environment. But it cannot map onto an existing building, a car or a cake, and at 400 square metres of heritage façade it is simply unaffordable. If the surface is the story, map it; if you need a rectangle that works in daylight, use LED.

  • Stock content instead of bespoke animation
    Our verdict

Stock loops and generative visuals genuinely work for ambient architectural washes and for leaner budgets. They cannot do a reveal, a narrative or anything that respects the building's actual architecture, because they are not authored to your geometry.
