3D Projection Mapping in Mohali
Mohali is Chandigarh's Punjab-side twin and the region's commercial engine — the Rajiv Gandhi Technology Park IT belt, the Phase 7 to 9 pharma and electronics focal points, PCA Stadium, and the production base of the Punjabi music industry. Its wedding market is NRI-funded, late-night and spends like a metro. Prime AV Solutions supplies the 3D projection mapping behind those events — designed on paper, proven in rehearsal and run by our own crew.

Key takeaway
3D Projection Mapping for Mohali’s biggest events
Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.
The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Mohali that plays out at venues like PCA Stadium, JW Marriott Mohali, Radisson Mohali, and across Phase 7, Aerocity Mohali, Sector 70, Kharar.
Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.

Local conditions
Producing 3D projection mapping in Mohali
Weather & the rig
Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. The Shivalik foothill position gives Mohali a genuinely cold Dec–Jan with nights at 3–6°C and the Punjab plains' dense radiation fog that closes Chandigarh airport for hours and destroys both projection and drone visibility. Apr–Jun reaches 42–44°C with pre-monsoon dust squalls off the plains. The particular local nuisance is late October and early November, when post-harvest stubble smoke adds a haze layer that reads badly on camera and muddies every beam-light effect. Apr–Jun heat; late Oct to early Nov stubble-smoke haze for anything camera-critical; and Dec–Jan fog for projection and aerial work.
Power & redundancy
Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. PSPCL supply in the Mohali sectors and the focal points is reasonable with good industrial feeders, but the paddy-season agricultural load brings evening voltage dips in exactly the show window, and the marriage-palace belt runs DG-primary regardless. Silent canopied sets are expected because the sectors are residential and complaints here reach the police quickly.
Permits & noise rules
Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. The Municipal Corporation Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar for the licence and temporary structures, GMADA as the development authority for public land, the Mohali police for the public-performance and loudspeaker licence, and Punjab Pollution Control Board noise rules with the 10 pm cut-off — which the Punjab and Haryana High Court has specifically pushed police to enforce against late-night marriage-palace sound, making it the most breached and most fined rule in this market. Punjab excise rules govern liquor service at venues. Chandigarh International Airport sits immediately on Mohali's southern edge, placing essentially the whole city inside a controlled zone, so drone shows need genuine DGCA and ATC coordination and are routinely refused.
Load-in & access
Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. One of the most straightforward load-ins in north India — Mohali is 10 km from Chandigarh's Sector 17 and shares its road network, the sector grid has wide roads and good venue approaches, and Delhi is 250 km and 4.5 hours on NH-44 with no meaningful restriction. Chandigarh airport takes air cargo. The local chokepoints are the Kharar–Landran and Airport Road construction corridors, plus Chandigarh's own commercial-vehicle entry timings if the gear stages on the UT side.
Season & booking
December and January are the real peak, because the diaspora flies in for Christmas and the Lohri window and the NRI wedding dates cluster there; a second season runs Mar–Apr around Baisakhi on 13 April. The IPL and international cricket windows contract PCA out entirely. Punjabi music industry tour dates fill the cool months, Hola Mohalla at Anandpur Sahib in March draws regional crew 85 km away, and the Chandigarh Rose Festival in February competes for inventory next door. Peak demand runs Oct–Mar.
Crew & dispatch
Own crew and stock across the Chandigarh–Mohali area, which function as one market; Delhi 4.5 hours down NH-44 supplies large-format LED, automation and broadcast inventory, and Chandigarh airport handles air cargo when a timeline is tight. Load-in support covers Phase 7, Aerocity Mohali and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
NRI-funded weddings are the most free-spending segment in this brief outside Goa's peak — multi-day, high production value and judged against what the family has seen in Toronto or Birmingham. Corporate IT and pharma work pays metro-adjacent rates for metro polish. The honest conversation is about the curfew, because clients routinely budget for a night that the law will not allow.
Local expectations
Punjabi weddings here are built around sound level and the late-night sangeet, which collides directly with the most actively enforced noise curfew in the region — the professional answer is a tightly designed, high-SPL-but-controlled system and a running order that peaks before the stop, not a plan that hopes nobody notices. Bhangra and dhol need floor space and acoustic headroom, Punjabi-first scripting with English for the diaspora, and jaggo and chooda ceremonies with their own early-morning setups. Corporate work on the IT side expects clean bilingual delivery and reliable hybrid streaming.
Specification
3D Projection Mapping: technical specification
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Projector class | 20,000 – 40,000 ANSI lumens, laser phosphor or RGB laser, 3-chip DLP |
| Surface reflectance assumption | 20 – 35 per cent for stone and painted plaster, lower for dark granite |
| Typical façade budget | Approximately 250 – 400 lumens per square metre of lit surface, ambient dependent |

| Alignment window | Night-time only, four to eight hours for a multi-projector façade |
| Content pipeline | Cinema 4D or Blender to UV-mapped render, delivered as image sequence |
| Show length | 3 – 12 minutes, usually looped with timecoded audio |
| Weather protection | IP-rated projector enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling for outdoor runs |
On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues
Where we work in Mohali
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| PCA Stadium | Roughly 26,000 seated | An international cricket ground in Sector 63 with real floodlight towers, large field access and proper crowd infrastructure; concert use needs PCA plus Mohali police clearance, outfield protection boarding, and acceptance that the curfew is hard because Chandigarh-border residential sectors sit right alongside. |
| JW Marriott Mohali | Up to 1,500 across a pillarless ballroom and lawns | The region's premium conference and wedding property on Airport Road, with a proper dock and show-grade power — the one venue here that takes a full corporate conference with no compromise, though ballroom rigging is rated conservatively. |
| Radisson Mohali | Up to 900 seated across banquet halls | Solid mid-market banqueting on the Kharar road side sized for 400–900; the lift-based load-in sets case dimensions and the flown-load ceiling is modest, so heavy video goes on ground support. |
| Phase 7 and Sector 82 marriage-palace belt | 1,000–3,000 across palaces and lawns | Where the volume weddings actually sit: open approach and parking, DG-primary power, and the venues most often cited in the local enforcement drives against late-night amplified sound, so the running order needs to be realistic about the stop time. |
| Siswan and New Chandigarh resort farms | 500–2,500 across lawns | The destination-feel option on the Shivalik foothill side: scenic, with space for parallel functions, but no mains worth using, long cable runs from the DG compound, and approach roads that soften badly after rain. |

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
The audience ends up standing off the designed viewing axis and the 3D illusion collapses.
How we prevent itThe viewing position is part of the design and is barricaded or seated on site, with content checked from the extreme left and right of the intended crowd area.
- What can go wrong
Street lighting or a neighbouring building's floodlights wash the façade and the show looks grey.
How we prevent itAmbient readings are taken at the show hour during the survey, and the blackout of specific street and site lights is negotiated and written into the permission before content is budgeted.
- What can go wrong
Content is authored before projector positions are fixed, so the animation does not sit on the geometry.
How we prevent itContent production does not begin until the projector study is signed off, because the mapping is authored against those exact camera positions.
- What can go wrong
A projector tower settles overnight in soft ground and the whole blend is out by morning.
How we prevent itTowers are built on load-spreading base plates, ballasted, and positions are physically marked so a realignment check before each show takes minutes.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Architectural lighting instead of mappingOur verdict
For a façade that only needs to look beautiful, uplighting and colour washes cost a fraction, go up in a day and work in light rain. Mapping is for when the building has to perform rather than just glow.
- LED wall instead of projection mappingOur verdict
LED beats projection on brightness, on reliability and in any lit environment. But it cannot map onto an existing building, a car or a cake, and at 400 square metres of heritage façade it is simply unaffordable. If the surface is the story, map it; if you need a rectangle that works in daylight, use LED.
- Stock content instead of bespoke animationOur verdict
Stock loops and generative visuals genuinely work for ambient architectural washes and for leaner budgets. They cannot do a reveal, a narrative or anything that respects the building's actual architecture, because they are not authored to your geometry.
