Key takeaway
3D Projection Mapping for Bhavnagar’s biggest events
Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.
The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Bhavnagar that plays out at venues like Nilambag Palace, Takhteshwar grounds, Hotel Lords, and across Waghawadi Road, Kalanala, Ghogha Circle, Vidyanagar.
Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.

Local conditions
Producing 3D projection mapping in Bhavnagar
Weather & the rig
Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. Bhavnagar sits on the Gulf of Khambhat, which gives it two distinct problems: a hot dry Apr–Jun at 42°C-plus with Saurashtra dust, and a persistent strong afternoon sea breeze off the gulf for most of the year that turns any un-ballasted outdoor structure into a sail. The gulf also carries enough salt and moisture inland to matter for gear left rigged overnight, and Jun–Sep rain comes in short intense bursts that flood the low ground around Kalanala. Apr–Jun Saurashtra heat and Jun–Sep monsoon; and never commit an outdoor build to the windy late-afternoon slot without a ballast plan.
Power & redundancy
Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. One of the easier power markets in the country — PGVCL supply is dependable, three-phase is readily available and sanctioned loads at hotels and halls are usually workable. DG here is genuine redundancy for a broadcast or VIP show rather than the primary source, which materially changes the cost line against most tier-2 cities.
Permits & noise rules
Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. Bhavnagar Municipal Corporation for the licence and temporary-structure permission, the DCP and district police for loudspeaker and assembly permission, GPCB noise rules with the 10 pm outdoor limit, and Gujarat's prohibition regime, which rules out any bar programme and reshapes the whole event format and timing. Bhavnagar Airport is a civil enclave practically inside the city, so most of the urban area falls in a controlled zone and drone work needs DGCA clearance that is often refused outright.
Load-in & access
Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. Ahmedabad is 200 km and roughly 4 hours on NH-751, and that is where almost all heavy LED, truss and large PA comes from. The Alang road carries constant heavy ship-plate traffic, so time any southern run outside yard shift changes. Within the city, Waghawadi Road and Ghogha Circle are the usable truck approaches; the old city around Darbargadh takes nothing bigger than a tempo.
Season & booking
Navratri is the fixed point — nine nights of garba across community plots takes every sound system, dimmer rack and truss span in the district, and bookings close months ahead. Uttarayan on 14 January empties the city onto its rooftops, Janmashtami brings its own civic programme, and the wedding grid clusters from Diwali through Labh Pancham and again around the spring auspicious dates. Peak demand runs Oct–Feb.
Crew & dispatch
Local crew with light stock in Bhavnagar; large-format LED, truss and line-array inventory trucks in from Ahmedabad, 4 hours on NH-751, with Rajkot as the fallback source 170 km west. Load-in support covers Vidyanagar, Sardarnagar and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
Alang and diamond-trade families spend seriously on a daughter's wedding but negotiate through a trusted intermediary and expect one supplier to carry the whole sequence at a blended rate. Industrial and port-side corporate work is firmly price-led. With no alcohol service, budget that would elsewhere go to a bar typically lands in stage, floral and food instead.
Local expectations
Events run early and finish early — a dry-state reception peaks at 8 pm, not midnight. Garba needs a wide low-level sound field across a circular floor rather than a front-facing PA, and the dandiya nights are judged on even coverage and tempo, not on spectacle. Gujarati-first scripting throughout, a strong preference for bright warm colour over moody washes, and Jain dietary and timing considerations that frequently set the schedule.

On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues
Where we work in Bhavnagar
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Nilambag Palace | Up to 800 across the courtyard and front lawn | A working heritage palace hotel: nothing fixes to the stone façade or the timber interiors, the courtyard offers no overhead rigging capability at all, and the load-in is through a single gate and a gravel drive — so the design has to be ground-supported, with the building lit rather than dressed. |
| Takhteshwar grounds | 5,000-plus standing on the open hillside ground | Open ground below the Takhteshwar temple on a rise with no shelter: the Gulf of Khambhat afternoon sea breeze loads banners and shade structures hard, so every upright needs ballast rather than pegs alone, and the mains here is nominal, making it a DG site. |
| Hotel Lords | Up to 600 seated across hall and terrace | Business-hotel banqueting with a lift-only load-in off Kalanala, a false ceiling that limits trim height, and parking that cannot absorb more than two vehicles at once — shuttling from a staging yard is the practical answer. |
| Victoria Park lawns | Up to 2,500 on the lawns | Municipal green belt on the city's western edge; permission comes from the corporation with real conditions on tree protection and ground penetration, and all power is generator-fed from a compound set back from the guest area. |
| Samaldas College grounds | Up to 4,000 on open ground | Institutional ground used for convocations and large civic gatherings; college administration approval, bare surface, and a dense surrounding residential grid that makes the sound curfew absolute. |

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
Dust and heat in an outdoor enclosure cause thermal shutdown mid-show.
How we prevent itIP-rated enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling, filters changed daily on a multi-night run, and internal temperature logged during rehearsal.
- What can go wrong
Brightness is calculated from lumens alone and the dark stone façade swallows the image.
How we prevent itThe calculation includes measured surface reflectance, not an assumed figure, and a test projection on the actual material is done at survey wherever access allows.
- What can go wrong
The audience ends up standing off the designed viewing axis and the 3D illusion collapses.
How we prevent itThe viewing position is part of the design and is barricaded or seated on site, with content checked from the extreme left and right of the intended crowd area.
- What can go wrong
Street lighting or a neighbouring building's floodlights wash the façade and the show looks grey.
How we prevent itAmbient readings are taken at the show hour during the survey, and the blackout of specific street and site lights is negotiated and written into the permission before content is budgeted.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Architectural lighting instead of mappingOur verdict
For a façade that only needs to look beautiful, uplighting and colour washes cost a fraction, go up in a day and work in light rain. Mapping is for when the building has to perform rather than just glow.
- LED wall instead of projection mappingOur verdict
LED beats projection on brightness, on reliability and in any lit environment. But it cannot map onto an existing building, a car or a cake, and at 400 square metres of heritage façade it is simply unaffordable. If the surface is the story, map it; if you need a rectangle that works in daylight, use LED.
- Stock content instead of bespoke animationOur verdict
Stock loops and generative visuals genuinely work for ambient architectural washes and for leaner budgets. They cannot do a reveal, a narrative or anything that respects the building's actual architecture, because they are not authored to your geometry.
