Key takeaway
Broadcast & Multi-Camera for Tiruchirappalli’s biggest events
Multi-camera production is a disciplined signal chain before it is a creative one. Cameras are genlocked to a common reference — tri-level sync for HD and UHD — so that every source is on the same clock and a cut between them is clean rather than a frame of glitch. Signals run on 12G-SDI over coax for short distances and on SMPTE fibre or triax for long camera positions, with camera control units allowing a vision engineer to shade iris, black level and colour matrix remotely from a rack position. That shading is what makes six cameras look like one camera from six angles, which is the difference between a multi-camera production and six separate recordings.
The room sets the camera plan: riser positions for long lenses, pit space for handhelds, jib clearance and whether the lighting rig will allow a usable exposure. In Tiruchirappalli that plays out at venues like Sangam Hotel, Kalaiarangam, Anna Stadium, and across Thillai Nagar, Cantonment, Srirangam, KK Nagar.
Camera positions are planned against the show, not the room. A typical award night runs a wide lock-off, two long-lens cameras on a riser at the back for presenter close-ups, a handheld or Steadicam in the pit for the walk-up, a jib for movement and reveals, and PTZ units in positions no operator can occupy. Everything is cut live by a director on a switcher — Ross, Blackmagic ATEM Constellation or a Sony — with the camera operators on intercom receiving frame instructions. A talkback system from Riedel or Clear-Com is non-negotiable: a multi-camera production without reliable comms is just hopeful.

Local conditions
Producing multi-camera broadcast in Tiruchirappalli
Weather & the rig
Cameras, lenses and fibre connectors are the equipment least tolerant of moisture and dust, and condensation on a lens moving between a cold control room and a humid outdoor pit costs minutes of show time. Trichy is consistently one of the hottest cities in Tamil Nadu, with April to June at 40–42°C and a dry interior heat that stresses amplifier racks and makes any daytime outdoor rehearsal unproductive. The Cauvery and Kollidam either side of the city raise overnight humidity sharply even in the dry months, so expect heavy dew on an open rig by morning. The north-east monsoon in October–December is the wet period, arriving as short violent evening downpours. April–June is the heat peak and unworkable outdoors by day; October–December north-east monsoon downpours make open-ground builds a gamble. November–February is the booking season, with January around Pongal the busiest.
Power & redundancy
A broadcast chain needs clean, continuous power on its own distribution, because a momentary dip takes down cameras, CCUs, the switcher and the recording all at once. TANGEDCO supply into the industrial belt is firm because BHEL and the ordnance units demand it, but civic venues and mandapams run on small sanctioned loads and old distribution boards that should not be trusted with a modern LED and lighting load. The generator trade here is unusually competent for a tier-2 city thanks to the engineering industry, so good silent sets, proper changeover panels and qualified operators are genuinely available locally.
Permits & noise rules
Filming brings its own requirements — venue filming rights, audience consent notices, and clearances for any aerial or drone-mounted camera position. Tiruchirappalli City Corporation issues ground and pandal permissions, the city police license assembly, and the Tamil Nadu noise rules with the 10 pm amplified-sound limit are enforced — strictly so around Srirangam, where the temple administration's own conditions on sound and timing take precedence. Trichy International Airport sits close to the southern edge of the city, which makes drone operations in much of the urban area a DGCA clearance matter against a live approach corridor, and the Rockfort and Srirangam heritage structures rule out fixings and heat-generating fixtures nearby.
Load-in & access
Camera positions need cable routes that cross audience areas and a control room position with sightline and comms, so the cabling plan has to be agreed before seating is set. The city itself is straightforward — major highways converge here and the Cantonment and bypass venues take full trucks. Srirangam is the exception: the temple town's prakaram streets take only small tempos, pilgrim footfall is constant, and the practical load-in is a hand-carry shuttle in the early hours. The Cauvery bridges are the chokepoints between the two halves of the city, so build travel time into any split call.
Season & booking
Vaikunta Ekadasi in December–January opens the Paramapadha Vasal at Srirangam and fills the temple town completely; the Chithirai and Panguni temple festivals and the local car festivals each lock sound and lighting stock. Pongal in mid-January is the homecoming and wedding peak. Aadi and Purattasi are inauspicious for weddings, and NIT's festival season takes February and March dates. Peak demand runs Nov–Feb.
Crew & dispatch
Served from our Chennai base, 330 km at about six hours, with a Madurai crew pool 140 km south as the faster response for Srirangam work and Coimbatore as the alternate for structures and spares. Load-in support covers KK Nagar, Woraiyur and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
A disciplined, documentation-driven market on the industrial side — PSU and ordnance work goes through formal tendering with specification sheets and GST-clean paperwork, and margins are thin but payment is certain. NRI wedding budgets are the opposite: generous, decided quickly, and benchmarked against what the family saw in Singapore or Dubai rather than against local rates.
Local expectations
Srirangam and Rockfort weddings follow Vaishnava convention closely, with muhurat windows often before dawn, nadaswaram and thavil ensembles that need gentle acoustic support rather than reinforcement, and Sanskrit and Tamil liturgy that must be audible to the whole hall without sounding amplified. Industrial functions are formal and hierarchical — the dais order matters, long-service felicitations need many roving mics, and Tamil and English bilingual content is expected throughout.

What happens to the signal afterwards shapes the whole build. If the show feeds IMAG screens, the programme cut must be clean and the switcher has to supply separate outputs for the screens, the stream and the record. If it feeds a broadcaster, their delivery specification governs frame rate, colour space, loudness and the clean feed they require without graphics. If the output is a post-event film, we record isolated camera feeds — ISOs — alongside the programme cut, because an editor with six ISOs can build something the live cut never could. Same-day highlight edits run off a shuttle drive to an on-site edit position while the show is still in progress.

Venues
Where we work in Tiruchirappalli
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Sangam Hotel | 600–1,200 across the banquet halls and lawn | The city's long-standing business hotel, centrally placed on Collector's Office Road, which means the dock is small and trucks cannot stand — unload in rotation and park out on the Cantonment side. |
| Kalaiarangam | Around 1,000 seated | A civic performance hall with a fixed proscenium, limited grid capacity and a hard reflective rear wall; touring rigs need a supplementary power feed and a delay solution for the balcony. |
| Anna Stadium | 15,000-plus in an open layout | A municipal athletics ground with no rigging, no usable show power and a track surface that must be fully protected — all loads sit on ply and spreaders, and the generator compound goes outside the perimeter. |
| Srirangam mandapams and temple-adjacent halls | 800–3,000 depending on the hall | Inside the temple town, where the concentric prakaram streets are narrow and crowded, vehicles are restricted, and the Ranganathaswamy administration governs timings, sound levels and anything visible from the gopuram approaches. |
| Thillai Nagar and bypass convention centres | 1,000–2,000 seated | The practical choice for large receptions, with decent three-phase provision, though the surrounding residential density makes the 10 pm limit a live constraint rather than a formality. |
Crew
Who turns up on show day
- Director
Calls the cut live from the running order, gives frame instructions to operators and decides what the audience sees at every moment.
- Vision engineer
Shades every camera from the rack so six sources match, and owns genlock, colour and signal integrity across the chain.
- Camera operators
Hold and move shots to the director's call, anticipate the action rather than chase it, and protect the frame through a cut.
- Jib and specialist operators
Deliver the movement and reveal shots — jib, Steadicam, dolly — that give a production its production value.
- Replay operator
Marks and plays back moments for IMAG or broadcast, working a few seconds behind live with the director.
- On-site editor
Pulls selects off shuttle drives during the show and delivers a highlight cut the same night.

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
The post team receives only the programme cut and cannot build the film the client expected.
How we prevent itEvery camera records an isolated feed as standard, and the delivery specification — including ISOs, clean feed and audio stems — is confirmed in writing at T-2 weeks.
- What can go wrong
Media cards are cleared before the offload is verified and footage is lost irrecoverably.
How we prevent itOffload is checksummed and verified against the source before any card is reformatted, with a second copy on separate media before the trucks leave.
- What can go wrong
Stage lighting is designed for the room and leaves presenters too contrasty to shade usably.
How we prevent itKey levels and colour temperature are agreed with the lighting designer during design and verified under camera at rehearsal, with the rig balanced for camera.
- What can go wrong
Cameras are not genlocked and every cut shows a frame of tearing on the IMAG screens.
How we prevent itTri-level sync is distributed to every source and verified at the switcher during the build, because the fault is invisible on a single camera and obvious on every cut.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Hiring an OB van instead of a flypack control positionOur verdict
An OB van is faster to deploy and purpose-built, and right for sport and large televised productions. A flypack built into a control room is cheaper, fits venues a van cannot park at, and is more than adequate up to eight or ten cameras.
- A single-camera record instead of a multi-camera productionOur verdict
A well-operated single camera with good audio is a perfectly respectable record of a conference and costs a fraction. It cannot serve IMAG, cannot cut to a reaction, and gives an editor nothing to work with — so it is a record, not a production.
- PTZ cameras instead of manned positionsOur verdict
PTZ units are excellent in positions no operator can occupy and have become genuinely good. They still cannot anticipate action the way an operator does, and a show cut entirely from PTZs looks subtly late throughout. Mix them in; do not build on them alone.
