Multi-Camera Broadcast in Coimbatore

Coimbatore is Tamil Nadu's engineering capital — spinning mills, pump and motor manufacturing, auto components and foundries — and its event spend reflects that: trade exhibitions at CODISSIA are the anchor, flanked by conferences for the PSG, Amrita and Kumaraguru institutions and a large, technically literate industrial-family wedding market. Prime AV Solutions supplies the broadcast & multi-camera behind those events — designed on paper, proven in rehearsal and run by our own crew.

Key takeaway

Broadcast & Multi-Camera in Coimbatore is quoted against your guest count, venue and run of show. Specification-literate and genuinely price-disciplined — these clients compare line items, ask what a line does and will substitute a cheaper equivalent if the answer is vague. The margin here comes from repeat exhibition and dealer-meet work across an annual cycle rather than from a single premium build, and a clear technical justification does more for a quote than a discount. CODISSIA's major fairs — INTEC and the textile-machinery exhibitions — lock the complex and every hotel room in the city for a fortnight at a time and should be checked before any date is confirmed. Pongal in mid-January is the family-travel peak. The Tamil wedding calendar avoids Aadi and Puratassi entirely and clusters in Thai, Panguni and Vaikasi, and Isha's Mahashivratri gathering in late Feb or Mar draws crew and vehicles out towards Velliangiri — so we quote within 24 hours and hold dates first-come.

Broadcast & Multi-Camera for Coimbatore’s biggest events

Multi-camera production is a disciplined signal chain before it is a creative one. Cameras are genlocked to a common reference — tri-level sync for HD and UHD — so that every source is on the same clock and a cut between them is clean rather than a frame of glitch. Signals run on 12G-SDI over coax for short distances and on SMPTE fibre or triax for long camera positions, with camera control units allowing a vision engineer to shade iris, black level and colour matrix remotely from a rack position. That shading is what makes six cameras look like one camera from six angles, which is the difference between a multi-camera production and six separate recordings.

The room sets the camera plan: riser positions for long lenses, pit space for handhelds, jib clearance and whether the lighting rig will allow a usable exposure. In Coimbatore that plays out at venues like CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex, Le Meridien Coimbatore, Vivanta Coimbatore, and across RS Puram, Peelamedu, Avinashi Road, Saibaba Colony.

Camera positions are planned against the show, not the room. A typical award night runs a wide lock-off, two long-lens cameras on a riser at the back for presenter close-ups, a handheld or Steadicam in the pit for the walk-up, a jib for movement and reveals, and PTZ units in positions no operator can occupy. Everything is cut live by a director on a switcher — Ross, Blackmagic ATEM Constellation or a Sony — with the camera operators on intercom receiving frame instructions. A talkback system from Riedel or Clear-Com is non-negotiable: a multi-camera production without reliable comms is just hopeful.

Local conditions

Producing multi-camera broadcast in Coimbatore

Weather & the rig

Cameras, lenses and fibre connectors are the equipment least tolerant of moisture and dust, and condensation on a lens moving between a cold control room and a humid outdoor pit costs minutes of show time. The distinctive factor is wind, not heat. Coimbatore sits at the eastern mouth of the Palghat Gap, so from June to September a strong steady westerly funnels through — the reason Tamil Nadu's wind farms cluster around Palladam — and it is a real constraint on outdoor banners, flown truss and anything with a sail area, even on a clear day. Temperatures are moderate by Tamil standards at 36–38°C in Apr–May, and the northeast monsoon brings Oct–Nov rain in heavy evening bursts. Oct–Nov northeast monsoon downpours; and Jun–Sep for outdoor structures unless the design accounts for the gap wind.

Power & redundancy

A broadcast chain needs clean, continuous power on its own distribution, because a momentary dip takes down cameras, CCUs, the switcher and the recording all at once. TANGEDCO supply across the industrial belt is comparatively stable and the mills and CODISSIA run on HT connections with real capacity, which makes this one of the better tier-2 power environments. Silent DG is commonly specified by clients themselves, and factory-site events can often draw from the plant's own supply with a proper changeover rather than bringing a set.

Permits & noise rules

Filming brings its own requirements — venue filming rights, audience consent notices, and clearances for any aerial or drone-mounted camera position. Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation for the licence and temporary-structure permission, the Coimbatore City Police Commissionerate for the loudspeaker permission, and TNPCB noise rules with the 10 pm limit, which Tamil Nadu enforces against amplified sound near residential areas on the strength of Madras High Court directions. Coimbatore International Airport at Peelamedu is close to both CODISSIA and the Neelambur hotel belt, so drone operations in the city's eastern half need DGCA clearance and are frequently refused outright.

Load-in & access

Camera positions need cable routes that cross audience areas and a control room position with sightline and comms, so the cabling plan has to be agreed before seating is set. Coimbatore is a genuine freight town, so trucks, labour and rigging hands are available locally rather than imported — a real advantage over most tier-2 cities. Chennai is 500 km and 8 hours, Bengaluru 360 km and 6.5 hours via Salem, Kochi 190 km and 4 hours. CODISSIA's drive-in halls and proper docks mean a 40-ft trailer reaches the build position, which is rare at this tier; the compensating headache is Avinashi Road flyover construction and daytime heavy-vehicle timing on the city arterials.

Season & booking

CODISSIA's major fairs — INTEC and the textile-machinery exhibitions — lock the complex and every hotel room in the city for a fortnight at a time and should be checked before any date is confirmed. Pongal in mid-January is the family-travel peak. The Tamil wedding calendar avoids Aadi and Puratassi entirely and clusters in Thai, Panguni and Vaikasi, and Isha's Mahashivratri gathering in late Feb or Mar draws crew and vehicles out towards Velliangiri. Peak demand runs Nov–Feb.

Crew & dispatch

Own Coimbatore crew and stock, supplemented from Kochi 4 hours west or Bengaluru 6.5 hours north when a show outgrows local inventory; the local freight market means trucking is sourced in the city rather than brought in. Load-in support covers RS Puram, Peelamedu and the rest of the city.

What it costs here

Specification-literate and genuinely price-disciplined — these clients compare line items, ask what a line does and will substitute a cheaper equivalent if the answer is vague. The margin here comes from repeat exhibition and dealer-meet work across an annual cycle rather than from a single premium build, and a clear technical justification does more for a quote than a discount.

Local expectations

Tamil muhurat timings run early — many ceremonies sit in the 5–9 am window — so the main production day starts before dawn and the reception rig is a separate build the same evening. Nadaswaram and thavil are loud acoustic instruments that need headroom and careful placement rather than close miking at level. Lighting is expected warm, because silk and gold read badly under cool white. Scripting is Tamil-first with English for the corporate layer, and budget discipline is absolute.

On-site editShuttle drive to an edit position for same-day highlight delivery

What happens to the signal afterwards shapes the whole build. If the show feeds IMAG screens, the programme cut must be clean and the switcher has to supply separate outputs for the screens, the stream and the record. If it feeds a broadcaster, their delivery specification governs frame rate, colour space, loudness and the clean feed they require without graphics. If the output is a post-event film, we record isolated camera feeds — ISOs — alongside the programme cut, because an editor with six ISOs can build something the live cut never could. Same-day highlight edits run off a shuttle drive to an on-site edit position while the show is still in progress.

Venues

Where we work in Coimbatore

VenueCapacityProduction note
CODISSIA Trade Fair ComplexUp to 20,000 across pillarless exhibition hallsGenuinely rare infrastructure for a tier-2 city — large column-free halls with 12–15 m clear height, real rigging capability and drive-in access straight to the hall floor. The catch is electrical: hall power is distributed as stall feeders, so a single large show load needs its own transformer tap or DG rather than borrowing from the exhibition supply.
Le Meridien CoimbatoreUp to 1,200 across ballroom and lawnsNeelambur location on the airport side with good truck approach and the cleanest power in the city's hotel stock; ballroom rigging is rated conservatively, and because the property sits close to the runway approach any aerial element is a non-starter.
Vivanta CoimbatoreUp to 800 across banquet hallsRace Course address, central and therefore congested — load-in is a timed night operation off a busy road with a modest dock, and the banquet ceiling trim limits flown video.
The Residency TowersUp to 900 seated across hallsAvinashi Road property with halls stacked across levels, so case sizes are set by the goods lift; the Avinashi Road flyover works periodically change the usable approach, which has to be confirmed rather than assumed.
VOC Park groundsUp to 6,000 on open groundCentral municipal park ground used for exhibitions and public functions: corporation permission with tree-protection conditions, bare surface, no show-grade power, and a dense residential ring that makes the 10 pm cut-off firm.

Crew

Who turns up on show day

  • Director

Calls the cut live from the running order, gives frame instructions to operators and decides what the audience sees at every moment.

  • Vision engineer

Shades every camera from the rack so six sources match, and owns genlock, colour and signal integrity across the chain.

  • Camera operators

Hold and move shots to the director's call, anticipate the action rather than chase it, and protect the frame through a cut.

  • Jib and specialist operators

Deliver the movement and reveal shots — jib, Steadicam, dolly — that give a production its production value.

  • Replay operator

Marks and plays back moments for IMAG or broadcast, working a few seconds behind live with the director.

  • On-site editor

Pulls selects off shuttle drives during the show and delivers a highlight cut the same night.

What you receive

  • Camera plan drawing with every position and lens package
  • Signal flow and output map including genlock distribution
  • Programme cut recording at full quality
  • Isolated camera recordings for every position
  • Clean feed without graphics where a broadcaster requires it
  • Same-day highlight edit where contracted
  • Verified media offload report with checksums before any card is reused

Risk control

What goes wrong, and how we stop it

  • What can go wrong

Six cameras each have a different colour balance and the cut looks like six different events.

    How we prevent it

Every camera is shaded from the rack by a vision engineer under the actual stage lighting, and the match is re-checked after any significant lighting change.

  • What can go wrong

The director loses contact with a camera operator at the critical moment.

    How we prevent it

A proper intercom system with per-position talkback and a tested backup channel, plus wired comms on fixed positions rather than relying on wireless packs throughout.

  • What can go wrong

The post team receives only the programme cut and cannot build the film the client expected.

    How we prevent it

Every camera records an isolated feed as standard, and the delivery specification — including ISOs, clean feed and audio stems — is confirmed in writing at T-2 weeks.

  • What can go wrong

Media cards are cleared before the offload is verified and footage is lost irrecoverably.

    How we prevent it

Offload is checksummed and verified against the source before any card is reformatted, with a second copy on separate media before the trucks leave.

Honest comparison

Is this the right choice for your event?

  • Hiring an OB van instead of a flypack control position
    Our verdict

An OB van is faster to deploy and purpose-built, and right for sport and large televised productions. A flypack built into a control room is cheaper, fits venues a van cannot park at, and is more than adequate up to eight or ten cameras.

  • A single-camera record instead of a multi-camera production
    Our verdict

A well-operated single camera with good audio is a perfectly respectable record of a conference and costs a fraction. It cannot serve IMAG, cannot cut to a reaction, and gives an editor nothing to work with — so it is a record, not a production.

  • PTZ cameras instead of manned positions
    Our verdict

PTZ units are excellent in positions no operator can occupy and have become genuinely good. They still cannot anticipate action the way an operator does, and a show cut entirely from PTZs looks subtly late throughout. Mix them in; do not build on them alone.
