Multi-Camera Broadcast in Dehradun
Uttarakhand's capital runs on three engines that all buy production: the state secretariat and its department conferences, an unusually dense institutional cluster — The Doon School, Welham, the Forest Research Institute, the Indian Military Academy, ONGC and Survey of India — and the Mussoorie hill-wedding trade 35 km up the road, which uses Dehradun as its staging city. Prime AV Solutions supplies the broadcast & multi-camera behind those events — designed on paper, proven in rehearsal and run by our own crew.

Key takeaway
Broadcast & Multi-Camera for Dehradun’s biggest events
Multi-camera production is a disciplined signal chain before it is a creative one. Cameras are genlocked to a common reference — tri-level sync for HD and UHD — so that every source is on the same clock and a cut between them is clean rather than a frame of glitch. Signals run on 12G-SDI over coax for short distances and on SMPTE fibre or triax for long camera positions, with camera control units allowing a vision engineer to shade iris, black level and colour matrix remotely from a rack position. That shading is what makes six cameras look like one camera from six angles, which is the difference between a multi-camera production and six separate recordings.
The room sets the camera plan: riser positions for long lenses, pit space for handhelds, jib clearance and whether the lighting rig will allow a usable exposure. In Dehradun that plays out at venues like Hotel Pacific, JW Marriott Mussoorie, Parade Ground, and across Rajpur Road, Sahastradhara Road, Prem Nagar, Clement Town.
Camera positions are planned against the show, not the room. A typical award night runs a wide lock-off, two long-lens cameras on a riser at the back for presenter close-ups, a handheld or Steadicam in the pit for the walk-up, a jib for movement and reveals, and PTZ units in positions no operator can occupy. Everything is cut live by a director on a switcher — Ross, Blackmagic ATEM Constellation or a Sony — with the camera operators on intercom receiving frame instructions. A talkback system from Riedel or Clear-Com is non-negotiable: a multi-camera production without reliable comms is just hopeful.

Local conditions
Producing multi-camera broadcast in Dehradun
Weather & the rig
Cameras, lenses and fibre connectors are the equipment least tolerant of moisture and dust, and condensation on a lens moving between a cold control room and a humid outdoor pit costs minutes of show time. The Doon Valley is a rain trap — Jul–Sep delivers over 2,000 mm with the Rispana and Bindal in spate and fresh slips on the Mussoorie road. Apr–Jun touches 38°C on the valley floor while Mussoorie sits 10–12°C cooler, so one wedding weekend can need misting fans at the Dehradun welcome dinner and patio heaters at the hill venue. Dec–Jan dawn fog in the valley is thick enough to kill long-throw projection, and January snow on the ridge closes the upper road without notice. Jul–Sep valley monsoon and Mussoorie road slips; late Jan if the plan depends on the hill approach staying open.
Power & redundancy
A broadcast chain needs clean, continuous power on its own distribution, because a momentary dip takes down cameras, CCUs, the switcher and the recording all at once. UPCL supply on Rajpur Road and through the cantonment is adequate, but the Mussoorie hill feeders trip in storms and winter restoration runs to hours. Hill hotels carry DG sized for hotel services, not a show, so any real rig brings its own sets — and getting a 250 kVA set up the hairpins is a planned move in itself. Parade Ground and the open venues are DG-only.
Permits & noise rules
Filming brings its own requirements — venue filming rights, audience consent notices, and clearances for any aerial or drone-mounted camera position. Dehradun Nagar Nigam for the licence and temporary-structure permission, the SSP Dehradun and district magistrate for assembly and loudspeaker permission, Uttarakhand's noise rules with the Supreme Court's 10 pm cut-off on outdoor amplified sound, and the district administration for Parade Ground itself. Mussoorie sits under its own Nagar Palika Parishad with hill-station vehicle-entry and parking rules, and Forest Department sign-off is needed where a venue abuts notified forest. Jolly Grant airport 25 km east plus IMA and cantonment airspace make drone clearance a slow Digital Sky and local-police exercise.
Load-in & access
Camera positions need cable routes that cross audience areas and a control room position with sightline and comms, so the cabling plan has to be agreed before seating is set. Delhi is 240 km and the new Dehradun corridor has cut the run to roughly five hours, so Delhi-sourced trucks move overnight. The real job starts past Kempty: the climb to Mussoorie has tight hairpins, a practical length ceiling around 19 ft and timed hill-station entry, so plan a transfer, smaller vehicles and porters. In the city, Rajpur Road and Paltan Bazaar bar heavy vehicles through the day, pushing load-ins to 10 pm–7 am.
Season & booking
The IMA Passing Out Parade in June and December fills every room in the valley and brings its own security perimeter. Add school founder's-day and old-boys weekends, the May–Jun Mussoorie tourist peak when the hill road is at capacity, Kanwar Yatra diversions through Shravan, and the Nov–Dec and Feb–Apr wedding clusters that hill resorts sell out a year ahead. Peak demand runs Oct–Jun.
Crew & dispatch
Own Dehradun crew for valley work; heavy trucking and additional stock move up from Delhi overnight on the Dehradun corridor, roughly 5 hours. Hill jobs stage in Dehradun and transfer to small vehicles below Kempty. Load-in support covers Rajpur Road, Sahastradhara Road and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
Two tiers sit side by side. Government and institutional work is tendered, heavily documented and slow to pay, but repeats annually. Mussoorie hill weddings — largely Delhi and NRI clients — carry a real hill loading for transfer vehicles, porterage, crew accommodation and the extra build day, and experienced clients expect those lines shown rather than buried.
Local expectations
Garhwali custom sits alongside Delhi and Punjabi expectation inside the same wedding: mangal geet and dhol-damau need acoustic space, then the sangeet runs at plains sound levels until the curfew. Hill venues are bought for the view, so clients resist large LED walls across the valley and prefer warm practical lighting with projection onto architecture. Institutional work is formal — lamp-lighting protocol, exact name boards, Hindi-first scripting.

What happens to the signal afterwards shapes the whole build. If the show feeds IMAG screens, the programme cut must be clean and the switcher has to supply separate outputs for the screens, the stream and the record. If it feeds a broadcaster, their delivery specification governs frame rate, colour space, loudness and the clean feed they require without graphics. If the output is a post-event film, we record isolated camera feeds — ISOs — alongside the programme cut, because an editor with six ISOs can build something the live cut never could. Same-day highlight edits run off a shuttle drive to an on-site edit position while the show is still in progress.

Venues
Where we work in Dehradun
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel Pacific | Up to 900 seated across two banquet halls | Rajpur Road frontage with no service lane, so unloading happens in police-timed slots on a live arterial and everything transfers to the goods lift; the banquet slab caps a flown rig at roughly 4 m trim. |
| JW Marriott Mussoorie | Up to 600 across ballroom and valley-facing lawns | Reached by the Dehradun–Mussoorie hairpins; the gate takes nothing longer than a 19-ft truck and the final private drive is steep, so budget a transfer below Kempty and an extra half-day for the climb. At roughly 1,900 m the overnight temperature drop fogs optics and drains batteries. |
| Parade Ground | 10,000-plus standing on open ground | District-administration land in the middle of the city: bare surface, no show-grade mains, matting needed under every wheel, and an institutional-plus-residential ring that makes the 10 pm finish genuinely enforced. |
| Forest Research Institute lawns | Up to 1,500 across the colonnade forecourt and lawns | The 1920s brick colonnade is what clients come for, but this is a working ICFRE research campus — approvals run through the institute, nothing fixes to the masonry, vehicle movement on the lawns is rationed and power is a long cable run from the campus supply. |
| Hotel Madhuban | Up to 500 seated in the main hall | Compact Rajpur Road property with a lift-only load-in and a shallow beam-to-slab gap; suited to conferences and receptions rather than anything needing a motorised flown rig. |
Crew
Who turns up on show day
- Director
Calls the cut live from the running order, gives frame instructions to operators and decides what the audience sees at every moment.
- Vision engineer
Shades every camera from the rack so six sources match, and owns genlock, colour and signal integrity across the chain.
- Camera operators
Hold and move shots to the director's call, anticipate the action rather than chase it, and protect the frame through a cut.
- Jib and specialist operators
Deliver the movement and reveal shots — jib, Steadicam, dolly — that give a production its production value.
- Replay operator
Marks and plays back moments for IMAG or broadcast, working a few seconds behind live with the director.
- On-site editor
Pulls selects off shuttle drives during the show and delivers a highlight cut the same night.

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
The post team receives only the programme cut and cannot build the film the client expected.
How we prevent itEvery camera records an isolated feed as standard, and the delivery specification — including ISOs, clean feed and audio stems — is confirmed in writing at T-2 weeks.
- What can go wrong
Media cards are cleared before the offload is verified and footage is lost irrecoverably.
How we prevent itOffload is checksummed and verified against the source before any card is reformatted, with a second copy on separate media before the trucks leave.
- What can go wrong
Stage lighting is designed for the room and leaves presenters too contrasty to shade usably.
How we prevent itKey levels and colour temperature are agreed with the lighting designer during design and verified under camera at rehearsal, with the rig balanced for camera.
- What can go wrong
Cameras are not genlocked and every cut shows a frame of tearing on the IMAG screens.
How we prevent itTri-level sync is distributed to every source and verified at the switcher during the build, because the fault is invisible on a single camera and obvious on every cut.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Hiring an OB van instead of a flypack control positionOur verdict
An OB van is faster to deploy and purpose-built, and right for sport and large televised productions. A flypack built into a control room is cheaper, fits venues a van cannot park at, and is more than adequate up to eight or ten cameras.
- A single-camera record instead of a multi-camera productionOur verdict
A well-operated single camera with good audio is a perfectly respectable record of a conference and costs a fraction. It cannot serve IMAG, cannot cut to a reaction, and gives an editor nothing to work with — so it is a record, not a production.
- PTZ cameras instead of manned positionsOur verdict
PTZ units are excellent in positions no operator can occupy and have become genuinely good. They still cannot anticipate action the way an operator does, and a show cut entirely from PTZs looks subtly late throughout. Mix them in; do not build on them alone.
