Key takeaway

3D Projection Mapping in Patna is quoted against your guest count, venue and run of show. A price-sensitive market with aggressive local competition on basic sound-and-light, so the case for an engineered rig has to be made on reliability, crowd safety and intelligibility rather than on a specification sheet. Travel and accommodation loading from Kolkata is significant and best quoted openly. Chhath Puja in October or November is the defining Bihar event — ghats across the city host lakhs of devotees, the administration's own arrangements take absolute precedence, and every local sound system, light tower and generator is committed. Sonepur Mela follows in November nearby, the November-December and February muhurats fill the wedding inventory, and Bihar Diwas in March brings state-scale public events — so we quote within 24 hours and hold dates first-come.

3D Projection Mapping for Patna’s biggest events

Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.

The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Patna that plays out at venues like Bapu Sabhagar, Gandhi Maidan, Hotel Maurya, and across Boring Road, Kankarbagh, Fraser Road, Bailey Road.

Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.

Local conditions

Producing 3D projection mapping in Patna

Weather & the rig

Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. Beside the Ganga on the flood plain, Patna combines heat with humidity in a way that is harder on amplifier racks than dry 45°C elsewhere — May and June exceed 43°C with high moisture, so forced-air cooling and headroom in reserve are both required. Winter brings thick, persistent river fog through December and January that kills projection throw and makes an overnight truck arrival from Delhi unreliable enough to need a day of margin. Jun–Sep monsoon with genuine Ganga flood risk in the diara and the low-lying wards; Dec–Jan fog for any design that depends on projection.

Power & redundancy

Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. Bihar's grid has improved substantially over the past decade, but Patna still sees voltage fluctuation and short interruptions, so DG is not the backup here — it is the primary design assumption, typically a synchronised pair with automatic changeover holding everything show-critical. BSPCB acoustic enclosure rules apply and silent sets are expected along the residential stretches of Boring Road and Bailey Road.

Permits & noise rules

Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. Permission for a large gathering at Gandhi Maidan comes from the District Magistrate's office rather than the municipal body, which is a different and slower route than most cities and is the single most common planning error outsiders make here. Patna Municipal Corporation handles ground and structure permission elsewhere, the Patna Police license loudspeakers, and BSPCB applies the noise standards with the 10pm cut. Jay Prakash Narayan Airport sits unusually close to the centre with a short runway and a difficult approach, so the drone restriction over central Patna is wide and firmly policed.

Load-in & access

Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. Trucks reach Patna on NH-19 and NH-31, and the Mahatma Gandhi Setu over the Ganga has long been a bottleneck, so arrival times are planned with delay assumed rather than hoped against. Inside the city, Ashok Rajpath and the old quarter towards Patna City are narrow and congested with small vehicles only. Gandhi Maidan itself admits vehicles through designated gates only, on administration approval, which sets the whole build sequence.

Season & booking

Chhath Puja in October or November is the defining Bihar event — ghats across the city host lakhs of devotees, the administration's own arrangements take absolute precedence, and every local sound system, light tower and generator is committed. Sonepur Mela follows in November nearby, the November-December and February muhurats fill the wedding inventory, and Bihar Diwas in March brings state-scale public events. Peak demand runs Oct–Feb.

Crew & dispatch

Trucked from Kolkata in ten to twelve hours on NH-19, which is the better origin for most Patna work, with Delhi NCR at sixteen to eighteen hours as the alternative; local labour and DG hired in Patna. Load-in support covers Fraser Road, Bailey Road and the rest of the city.

What it costs here

A price-sensitive market with aggressive local competition on basic sound-and-light, so the case for an engineered rig has to be made on reliability, crowd safety and intelligibility rather than on a specification sheet. Travel and accommodation loading from Kolkata is significant and best quoted openly.

Local expectations

Public and political events dominate and they are judged on one thing: whether the speech is clearly intelligible 300 metres back. That makes a distributed delay-tower design, time-aligned and level-matched, worth more than any lighting investment. Bhojpuri and Maithili performers draw very large crowds with high SPL expectations, and weddings run long, multi-day and extended-family-scaled with a baraat procession that needs its own mobile power and PA.

On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues

Where we work in Patna

VenueCapacityProduction note
Bapu SabhagarA few thousand seated in the state convention auditoriumA modern state facility near Gandhi Maidan, which means security cordons and route restrictions on event days and a build window that has to be cleared with the district administration as much as with the venue.
Gandhi MaidanLakh-plus on the central maidanEvery element is temporary: all power generated, delay towers distributed across the ground because a stage-centred PA cannot carry 400m, and the stage structure itself signed off by the district administration before anything is built.
Hotel MauryaSeveral hundred across banquet halls on South Gandhi Maidan RoadThe city's long-established banqueting address, with a constrained service approach in a congested central location, so trucks are unloaded in sequence overnight rather than parked.
Shri Krishna Memorial HallAround 1,000-plus seatedA government auditorium with fixed seating, modest house infrastructure and departmental approvals, so a visiting rig brings its own power distribution as a matter of course.
Bihar Museum auditoriumAround 300 seatedA newer, well-specified space with institutional rules on load-in routes and protection of the building's finishes, which rules out the usual trolley-and-tape approach.

Crew

Who turns up on show day

  • Mapping technician

Builds the geometry model, warps each projector to the surface and maintains alignment across the run.

  • Media server operator

Runs disguise, Pixera or Watchout, holds the show timeline to timecode and keeps a mirrored backup server.

  • Content artist

Authors the animation against the UV-mapped geometry so it reads correctly from the audience viewing position.

  • Projector technician

Rigs, powers, focuses and cools each unit, monitors lamp or laser hours and swaps a failed unit without losing alignment.

  • Rigger

Builds and ballasts the projector towers, secures positions against wind and marks them for repeatable realignment.

What you receive

  • 3D geometry model of the mapped surface with the UV layout
  • Projector placement study with throw, brightness and coverage calculations
  • Master render of the show content at delivery resolution
  • Media server show file with timecode cues and a mirrored backup
  • Masking map showing every excluded window, balcony and dark zone
  • Audio stem and mixed show track used for synchronisation
  • Full-length video capture of the show as performed from the audience position

Risk control

What goes wrong, and how we stop it

  • What can go wrong

Dust and heat in an outdoor enclosure cause thermal shutdown mid-show.

    How we prevent it

IP-rated enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling, filters changed daily on a multi-night run, and internal temperature logged during rehearsal.

  • What can go wrong

Brightness is calculated from lumens alone and the dark stone façade swallows the image.

    How we prevent it

The calculation includes measured surface reflectance, not an assumed figure, and a test projection on the actual material is done at survey wherever access allows.

  • What can go wrong

The audience ends up standing off the designed viewing axis and the 3D illusion collapses.

    How we prevent it

The viewing position is part of the design and is barricaded or seated on site, with content checked from the extreme left and right of the intended crowd area.

  • What can go wrong

Street lighting or a neighbouring building's floodlights wash the façade and the show looks grey.

    How we prevent it

Ambient readings are taken at the show hour during the survey, and the blackout of specific street and site lights is negotiated and written into the permission before content is budgeted.

Honest comparison

Is this the right choice for your event?

  • Architectural lighting instead of mapping
    Our verdict

For a façade that only needs to look beautiful, uplighting and colour washes cost a fraction, go up in a day and work in light rain. Mapping is for when the building has to perform rather than just glow.

  • LED wall instead of projection mapping
    Our verdict

LED beats projection on brightness, on reliability and in any lit environment. But it cannot map onto an existing building, a car or a cake, and at 400 square metres of heritage façade it is simply unaffordable. If the surface is the story, map it; if you need a rectangle that works in daylight, use LED.

  • Stock content instead of bespoke animation
    Our verdict

Stock loops and generative visuals genuinely work for ambient architectural washes and for leaner budgets. They cannot do a reveal, a narrative or anything that respects the building's actual architecture, because they are not authored to your geometry.
