3D Projection Mapping in Kanpur
Kanpur's event spend comes off its factory floors: the Jajmau leather cluster, textile and hosiery units, the ordnance and defence establishments, and a dense network of engineering and chemical SMEs that run association meetings, dealer conferences and industrial exhibitions. IIT Kanpur adds a convocation and festival calendar with concert-scale requirements. Prime AV Solutions supplies the 3D projection mapping behind those events — designed on paper, proven in rehearsal and run by our own crew.

Key takeaway
3D Projection Mapping for Kanpur’s biggest events
Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.
The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Kanpur that plays out at venues like Green Park Stadium, Landmark Hotel, Moti Jheel, and across Civil Lines, Swaroop Nagar, Kakadeo, Kidwai Nagar.
Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.

Local conditions
Producing 3D projection mapping in Kanpur
Weather & the rig
Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. Kanpur records some of the harshest extremes on the plains — 46–47°C in May and June, and 3–5°C with persistent fog in January. The distinguishing factor, though, is particulate: the tannery belt and the industrial corridor put a heavy airborne grit into the air that fouls fixture filters and fan intakes noticeably faster than in other Indian cities of this size, so a mid-event filter change is scheduled into the run rather than handled as a fault. Jul–Sep monsoon, when the Ganga-side low ground at Jajmau and around Moti Jheel waterlogs; Dec–Jan fog for any projection-dependent design.
Power & redundancy
Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. KESCo's network has improved but the industrial feeders still sag under load, and the practical problem here is voltage fluctuation rather than outright failure — a servo stabiliser ahead of LED processing and dimmer racks is standard practice, not a precaution. Open-ground work runs on hired DG, which is cheap and plentiful because of the industrial base, with UPPCB acoustic norms applying.
Permits & noise rules
Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. Kanpur Nagar Nigam issues ground and temporary-structure permission, the Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate licenses amplified sound and gatherings, and UPPCB's noise standards with the 10pm cut apply. Drone clearance is genuinely restrictive here because Chakeri airport and the ordnance and defence establishments around Armapur and the Cantonment together cover a large share of the city's airspace.
Load-in & access
Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. The Grand Trunk Road and the Lucknow-Kanpur corridor feed the city, but the metro and elevated corridor works along Mall Road and Civil Lines have narrowed lanes and turning radii to the point where a loaded 32-ft trailer is better parked at a staging yard on the outskirts with a shuttle running on 14-ft trucks. Hotel load-ins in Civil Lines run after midnight, and the old quarter around Naughara and Generalganj takes handcarts only.
Season & booking
Ganga Mela, the Kanpur-specific water festival a few days after Holi, closes roads and commits local sound systems. Antaragni at IIT Kanpur in the autumn takes concert-scale sound and lighting for a long weekend, the November-December and February muhurats fill the banqueting inventory, and the winter trade fairs at Moti Jheel and Phool Bagh run for weeks. Peak demand runs Oct–Feb.
Crew & dispatch
Served from the Delhi NCR base at seven to eight hours, or from Lucknow at 1.5 hours when the job needs an augmentation rather than a full rig; local labour and DG hired in Kanpur. Load-in support covers Civil Lines, Swaroop Nagar and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
A cost-sensitive, negotiation-driven market where industrial buyers expect a line-item quotation they can argue with, and where the travel and accommodation loading for a metro-grade rig has to be stated up front and justified rather than buried in a package price.
Local expectations
Industrial and trade events here are substance-first: a lectern mic chain that never fails, slide legibility in a brightly lit hall, and a usable recording matter far more than a lighting look, and the audience will forgive plain design but not a dropout. Weddings follow north-Indian baraat timing with live dhol on the move, which means a mobile power plan and a battery-powered procession PA as a distinct sub-rig from the main venue system. Hindi throughout.

On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues
Where we work in Kanpur
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Green Park Stadium | Around 32,000 at Civil Lines | A Test venue, so UPCA clearance and complete outfield protection are prerequisites; there is no roof rigging anywhere and the older stand geometry limits where a ground-support tower can stand without killing a block of sightlines. |
| Landmark Hotel | A few hundred across banquet halls at Som Dutt Plaza | The city's established banqueting address, reached through a shared commercial basement and service approach, so kit is broken down to lift dimensions and the load-in runs after midnight. |
| Moti Jheel | Several thousand on open municipal ground | Lakeside ground with an unpaved surface, so dust suppression and matting come before anything else, the whole site is generated, and low ground near the water waterlogs after any heavy rain. |
| IIT Kanpur auditorium and lecture hall complex | Around 1,200 in the main auditorium | Campus venues with their own facilities approvals and a security gate process for vehicles, and an open-air festival ground nearby where the concert rigs actually go. |
| Phool Bagh ground | Several thousand on open ground in the city centre | Central location that works for public events but sits in dense traffic, so the build has to be staged overnight and the generator siting negotiated with the surrounding residential blocks. |
Crew
Who turns up on show day

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
A projector tower settles overnight in soft ground and the whole blend is out by morning.
How we prevent itTowers are built on load-spreading base plates, ballasted, and positions are physically marked so a realignment check before each show takes minutes.
- What can go wrong
Dust and heat in an outdoor enclosure cause thermal shutdown mid-show.
How we prevent itIP-rated enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling, filters changed daily on a multi-night run, and internal temperature logged during rehearsal.
- What can go wrong
Brightness is calculated from lumens alone and the dark stone façade swallows the image.
How we prevent itThe calculation includes measured surface reflectance, not an assumed figure, and a test projection on the actual material is done at survey wherever access allows.
- What can go wrong
The audience ends up standing off the designed viewing axis and the 3D illusion collapses.
How we prevent itThe viewing position is part of the design and is barricaded or seated on site, with content checked from the extreme left and right of the intended crowd area.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Fewer, brighter projectors instead of more unitsOur verdict
Fewer angles means fewer blends and a faster alignment, which is the right trade on a flat surface. Any building with depth, recesses or wings needs multiple angles regardless of total lumens, or the recesses stay dark.
- Architectural lighting instead of mappingOur verdict
For a façade that only needs to look beautiful, uplighting and colour washes cost a fraction, go up in a day and work in light rain. Mapping is for when the building has to perform rather than just glow.
- LED wall instead of projection mappingOur verdict
LED beats projection on brightness, on reliability and in any lit environment. But it cannot map onto an existing building, a car or a cake, and at 400 square metres of heritage façade it is simply unaffordable. If the surface is the story, map it; if you need a rectangle that works in daylight, use LED.
