Key takeaway
3D Projection Mapping for Indore’s biggest events
Projection mapping starts with a survey, not a storyboard. We photogrammetry-scan or LiDAR-measure the surface — a façade, a stage set, a car, a cake — and build a 3D model that matches the real object within a few centimetres. The projectors are then positioned virtually against that model to check throw ratio, keystone, shadowing from balconies or trees, and whether any part of the surface falls outside the beam. Only once the projector positions are fixed does content production begin, because a mapped animation is authored against a specific camera position and cannot simply be moved later.
The surface is the instrument here — its material, reflectance, depth and the audience's viewing axis decide projector count, angles and whether the illusion reads at all. In Indore that plays out at venues like Brilliant Convention Centre, Labh Ganga, Sayaji Hotel, and across Vijay Nagar, Palasia, AB Road, Rau.
Brightness is the engineering constraint that decides the budget. Perceived image brightness depends on lumens, surface area, the reflectance of the material and the ambient light falling on it. Stone and painted plaster reflect perhaps 20 to 35 per cent of what hits them; dark stone far less. A heritage façade of 400 square metres with street lighting nearby can need 100,000 lumens or more in total, which is three or four stacked 30K-class laser projectors per angle. Laser phosphor sources are the standard now because they hold brightness and colour across a run, start instantly and tolerate the dust and heat of an outdoor build far better than lamps.
What’s included
- 20K–40K lumen laser projectors
- Custom 3D content & storyboards
- Edge blending & warping (Pixera, Disguise)
- Heritage façades, cars, cakes & stages
Equipment we carry
Why Indore chooses Prime AV
- Crews and trucks positioned for fast load-in at Sayaji Hotel and venues in AB Road and Rau.
- Towers are built on load-spreading base plates, ballasted, and positions are physically marked so a realignment check before each show takes minutes.
- Projector placement study with throw, brightness and coverage calculations
- Working knowledge of Madhya Pradesh venue rules, power sanctions and permission timelines.

Local conditions
Producing 3D projection mapping in Indore
Weather & the rig
Mapping is defeated by air as much as by rain — haze, dust and humidity scatter the beam and soften a blend, so brightness headroom is specified against local conditions. The Malwa plateau at around 550m gives Indore the mildest summer of the big Madhya Pradesh cities, with 38–40°C peaks rather than Gwalior's 46, and genuinely cool dry December and January nights that suit outdoor builds. The real local hazard is the soil: Malwa's black cotton earth turns slick and deep under monsoon rain, so ground-support bases sink and a forklift bogs down without proper track matting — a lawn build here fails by subsidence long before it fails by rain. Jul–Sep, and specifically for the soil rather than the rainfall — the ground does not recover quickly, so a build within a fortnight of heavy rain still needs plating and load spreading.
Power & redundancy
Stacked 30K-class projectors each draw several kilowatts continuously for the whole run, so projection needs a dedicated, stable, uninterrupted supply rather than a share of the event distribution. MPPKVVCL supply in Indore is among the better networks in the state and the Vijay Nagar commercial belt is stable, so an indoor conference can sit on house power with a DG holding the critical path. Open-ground and festival work is generated, with MPPCB requiring acoustic enclosures and the 10pm cut applying.
Permits & noise rules
Mapping a building means permission to light it, towers on public or heritage ground, and usually a negotiated blackout of nearby street lighting for the show window. Indore Municipal Corporation handles ground permission and the temporary-structure NOC, and it is a noticeably more procedurally organised body than most in the state — it takes its civic record seriously and the paperwork is actually checked. The Indore Police Commissionerate licenses loudspeakers and crowds, MPPCB applies the noise standards, and Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport restricts drone operation across the western city.
Load-in & access
Projector towers, ballast and enclosures have to be placed on a precise viewing axis that is often a road or a public plaza, so access and closures drive the build plan. Indore sits on the Mumbai-Agra NH-52 corridor with good approach roads, and the Vijay Nagar and Scheme 78 venues take 32-ft trucks without difficulty. The old core inverts the usual pattern: Sarafa's night food market physically occupies the street from around 8pm, so an event in the Rajwada, Sarafa or Khajuri Bazaar quarter loads in during the day and strikes in the morning rather than working overnight.
Season & booking
The Anant Chaturdashi Jhanki procession — Indore's own moving-tableau parade on the day after Ganesh immersion — occupies the city's streets, fabricators and generators for the better part of a week. Rangpanchami's Ger procession after Holi does the same in spring, the November to February wedding season fills the banqueting inventory, and the city's food-festival weekends book sound and staging through the winter. Peak demand runs Oct–Feb.
Crew & dispatch
Trucked from Ahmedabad at about nine hours or Mumbai at about twelve depending on the specification, with local rigging labour, cabling and DG hired in Indore. Load-in support covers AB Road, Rau and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
Indore buyers are informed and comparison-driven — the market knows what LED costs per square foot and what a line array hires for — so a quotation is read line by line and tested against what they already know. Travel and accommodation loading has to be visible and defended rather than absorbed into a single headline figure.
Local expectations
Weddings and community functions run on committee decisions with several family stakeholders holding veto, so cue lists change late and the most valuable person on site is a floor manager with authority to decide. Garba and dandiya nights are popular here with a distinctly Malwa-Marwari band mix rather than a Gujarati one. Hindi compering, and a food service that dictates the show clock more reliably than the run sheet does.

On site, the work is warping, blending and masking. Each projector's output is warped onto the surface geometry using a media server — disguise, Pixera or Watchout — with overlap regions of 10 to 20 per cent soft-edge blended so no seam is visible. Masks cut the beam off windows, balconies and anything that must stay dark. Alignment is done at night with the actual content and takes hours, not minutes, and it must be re-checked if a projector is bumped or a tower settles. We lock projector positions with ballasted towers and mark every position so a knocked unit can be returned to alignment rather than re-mapped.

Venues
Where we work in Indore
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Brilliant Convention Centre | A few thousand in the pillarless main hall at Scheme 78 | The benchmark venue in Madhya Pradesh, with a proper dock, sensible rigging provision and adequate power — the only address in the state where a conference design does not have to be compromised around the building. |
| Labh Ganga | A few thousand across halls and grounds on the old Agra-Bombay Road | An older banqueting and exhibition complex, so ceiling clearances and the sanctioned load need measuring and verifying on a site visit rather than taken from a brochure. |
| Sayaji Hotel | Several hundred up to around 1,000 across the banquet complex at Vijay Nagar | Hotel load-in through service areas with a lift height limit, so LED cabinets and truss lengths are specified to the building and a larger screen moves to ground support in the pre-function space. |
| Abhay Prashal | Around 5,000 in the indoor arena | An indoor sports arena with limited roof rigging capacity, so concert and award designs here are tower-based and the seating bowl geometry constrains where those towers can go. |
| Dasara Maidan | Tens of thousands on open ground | Traditional public ground for festival and civic events: unpaved, generated end to end, and surrounded closely enough by housing that the sound design has to control rearward spill. |
Crew
Who turns up on show day

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
A projector tower settles overnight in soft ground and the whole blend is out by morning.
How we prevent itTowers are built on load-spreading base plates, ballasted, and positions are physically marked so a realignment check before each show takes minutes.
- What can go wrong
Dust and heat in an outdoor enclosure cause thermal shutdown mid-show.
How we prevent itIP-rated enclosures with filtered forced-air cooling, filters changed daily on a multi-night run, and internal temperature logged during rehearsal.
- What can go wrong
Brightness is calculated from lumens alone and the dark stone façade swallows the image.
How we prevent itThe calculation includes measured surface reflectance, not an assumed figure, and a test projection on the actual material is done at survey wherever access allows.
- What can go wrong
The audience ends up standing off the designed viewing axis and the 3D illusion collapses.
How we prevent itThe viewing position is part of the design and is barricaded or seated on site, with content checked from the extreme left and right of the intended crowd area.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- LED wall instead of projection mappingOur verdict
LED beats projection on brightness, on reliability and in any lit environment. But it cannot map onto an existing building, a car or a cake, and at 400 square metres of heritage façade it is simply unaffordable. If the surface is the story, map it; if you need a rectangle that works in daylight, use LED.
- Stock content instead of bespoke animationOur verdict
Stock loops and generative visuals genuinely work for ambient architectural washes and for leaner budgets. They cannot do a reveal, a narrative or anything that respects the building's actual architecture, because they are not authored to your geometry.
- Fewer, brighter projectors instead of more unitsOur verdict
Fewer angles means fewer blends and a faster alignment, which is the right trade on a flat surface. Any building with depth, recesses or wings needs multiple angles regardless of total lumens, or the recesses stay dark.
