Drone Light Show in Kolkata
Durga Puja is not a season here, it is the industry: thousands of pandals commission sound, lighting and structural work on a scale no other Indian city matches in a single fortnight. Around that sit the Sector V IT belt, the legacy engineering, tea and jute houses, a government and PSU circuit, and a music and theatre audience that genuinely judges audio quality. Prime AV Solutions supplies the drone light shows behind those events — designed on paper, proven in rehearsal and run by our own crew.

Key takeaway
Drone Light Shows for Kolkata’s biggest events
A drone light show is a choreographed flight, and the choreography is written in three dimensions against hard safety envelopes. Each aircraft is a small multirotor in the sub-kilogram class carrying a single high-output RGBW LED module. Positioning is GNSS-based, augmented by an RTK base station on site that corrects satellite error down to roughly centimetre-level accuracy — without RTK, formations of several hundred drones cannot hold the tight spacing that makes a logo readable. Flight paths are designed in show software, collision-checked in simulation, then uploaded to each aircraft which flies its own pre-loaded trajectory rather than being joysticked live.
What matters here is the sky and the ground beneath it: an unobstructed viewing axis, a clear flight volume with no tall structures or trees, and an audience position outside the buffer. In Kolkata that plays out at venues like Biswa Bangla Convention Centre, Science City, Netaji Indoor Stadium, and across Salt Lake, New Town, Park Street, Ballygunge.
Permission is the critical path, not the content. Indian drone operations fall under the Drone Rules 2021 administered by the DGCA through the Digital Sky platform, with the airspace map dividing the country into green, yellow and red zones. A show of this kind needs registered aircraft with UINs, a certified remote pilot, operation inside a defined and approved volume, and — because a swarm show is flown beyond the pilot's ability to see and control each unit individually — specific permission for the operating concept, plus night-operation clearance. Any site near an aerodrome falls into controlled airspace and needs ATC coordination. We open the permission file the day the booking is confirmed because clearances take weeks, not days.

Local conditions
Producing drone light show in Kolkata
Weather & the rig
Wind decides whether a drone show flies at all — most light-show platforms stop at around 8 metres per second sustained, and rain is an outright no-fly, so the local weather pattern sets the date as much as the calendar does. The Kalbaisakhi nor'westers in April and May are the design case here: they arrive in minutes with 70–90 km/h gusts, which means outdoor truss in Kolkata is ballasted and signed off for wind loading rather than merely sheeted against rain. Humidity sits near 80% from April to October and the Hooghly keeps overnight dew heavy enough that an outdoor projection surface will fog by 4am and a lectern mic capsule picks up moisture if left uncovered. Jun–Sep monsoon, when the low-lying southern and central wards waterlog within an hour of a heavy cell; and Sep–Oct if you need any inventory at all for something other than Puja.
Power & redundancy
A drone show needs comparatively little power but needs it reliably, because hundreds of battery sets have to be charged and cycled on site between a rehearsal flight and the show. CESC's city network is genuinely one of the better urban utilities in India, so indoor venues run on house power confidently. Puja pandals are a different exercise: temporary sanctioned connections are applied for formally through CESC or WBSEDCL well in advance, and the load per pandal is capped at what the application granted. Maidan and open-ground events are DG-fed with acoustic enclosures under WBPCB norms.
Permits & noise rules
Drone shows live or die on airspace clearance, so we start the permission file the day you book. Kolkata Municipal Corporation handles structures, the Kolkata Police Commissioner's office with the local police station licenses pandals and loudspeaker use, and WBPCB applies the noise rules with a 10pm to 6am silence period and a time-boxed festival relaxation. The Maidan is Army land, so an event there needs Eastern Command's NOC as a genuine step in the critical path rather than a formality. Drone operation is limited by the Dum Dum airport zone and by Fort William's restrictions over central Kolkata.
Load-in & access
The launch grid needs a flat, sterile, vehicle-accessible area of up to 100 metres square that stays clear of guests for the whole evening, which is often harder to find than the sky above it. Larger goods vehicles are barred from central Kolkata through the day, and arrival timing is dictated by which Hooghly crossing the truck uses. The Puja constraint is unlike anything else in India: pandals in the north Kolkata lanes around Shyambazar, Kumartuli and Bagbazar are reached only by handcart for the final 200m, the bamboo structure is complete before any kit arrives, and the hang points are the structure the decorator built, so the rigging design has to be agreed with the pandal fabricator weeks earlier.
Season & booking
From Mahalaya through Lakshmi Puja and on to Kali Puja, roughly late September to early November, every scaffolder, generator, line array and lighting rig in eastern India is committed and rates reflect it. The Kolkata International Film Festival in November and the Boi Mela in late January take the auditoria, and Poila Boishakh in mid-April brings its own cluster of cultural programming. Peak demand runs Oct–Feb.
Crew & dispatch
Own Kolkata base, which is also the practical origin for Patna, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati work. Load-in support covers Alipore, EM Bypass and the rest of the city.
What it costs here
Outside Puja this is a value market with strong, experienced local technical labour at reasonable day rates, so a two-day conference costs appreciably less here than the same build in Mumbai or Delhi. Inside the Puja window the same inventory prices at a multiple and has to be committed months ahead, which is a conversation to have in June rather than in September.
Local expectations
A Bengali audience for live music will notice a coloured PA and say so — Rabindra Sangeet, band and classical programming here want natural tonality and a low noise floor rather than brute level, and the vocal chain is judged more closely than the lighting. Puja committees expect continuous operation across five days, which means shift rotation, a crew rest plan and spares on site rather than in the warehouse. Bengali-language compering is the default and the committee's own hierarchy governs stage access.
Specification
Drone Light Shows: technical specification
| Specification | Detail |
|---|---|
| Fleet size | 100 – 1,000+ aircraft, scaled to the figure complexity required |
| Positioning | GNSS with on-site RTK base station, approximately centimetre-level accuracy |
| Aircraft class | Sub-1 kg multirotor with a single high-output RGBW LED module |
| Flight duration | 8 – 15 minutes per battery set, extended by staged launches |
| Flight volume | Typically 120 – 180 m above ground inside an approved and geofenced volume |
| Wind limit | Approximately 8 m/s sustained, with a lower documented gust ceiling |
| Audience separation | A buffer zone with no audience beneath the formation at any point |
| Regulatory framework | DGCA Drone Rules 2021, Digital Sky registration, UINs, certified remote pilot |
| Airspace | Green-zone siting preferred; yellow zone and near-aerodrome sites need ATC coordination |
| Fail-safes | Hard geofence, automatic return-to-launch, redundant radio link and an all-stop command |
On the ground, the show is a safety operation. A launch grid is laid out with fixed spacing per aircraft, surveyed and marked. A geofence is programmed as a hard boundary: aircraft that drift outside it are commanded to land or return automatically, and a separate buffer separates the flight volume from the audience, which never sits underneath the formation. Wind is the binding environmental limit — most light-show platforms are rated to roughly 8 metres per second sustained, with gust limits lower, and we hold a documented go/no-go wind figure. Rain is a hard stop. Every show carries a return-to-launch and an all-stop command on a redundant radio link.

Venues
Where we work in Kolkata
| Venue | Capacity | Production note |
|---|---|---|
| Biswa Bangla Convention Centre | Around 2,500 in the main hall plus a large grand ballroom at New Town | The city's only purpose-built modern convention venue, with generous clear height and working docks, which makes it the default whenever a design needs hung loads rather than towers. |
| Science City | Around 2,200 in the Main Auditorium with a smaller Mini Auditorium alongside | A fixed-seat theatre with house rigging positions and a fixed projection throw, so screen geometry is decided by the building and additional loads need the venue's engineering sign-off. |
| Netaji Indoor Stadium | Around 12,000 in concert configuration | Roof rigging is effectively unavailable, so the entire package is ground-supported, and the only vehicle approach runs through the congested Maidan roads under police bandobast on event days. |
| Rabindra Sadan | Around 1,000 seated | A cultural-complex auditorium with house infrastructure and a protective attitude to it, so visiting rigs work within the existing hang points and the build window is tight between programmes. |
| ITC Royal Bengal | Around 1,500 banquet across the ballroom and pre-function | Modern hotel with a usable service dock, but New Town traffic and the venue's own guest-movement rules push load-in to overnight slots. |
Crew
Who turns up on show day
- Remote pilot in command
Holds the DGCA certification and the legal authority for the flight, makes the go/no-go call and owns the all-stop.
- Show designer
Builds the 3D choreography, runs collision simulation and times every formation transition to the audio.
- Ground control operator
Runs the ground station, monitors telemetry and battery state across the fleet and triggers the launch sequence.
- RTK and comms technician
Sets up and verifies the RTK base station and the redundant radio link, and watches link margin throughout.
- Launch grid crew
Surveys and marks the grid, places and powers every aircraft, and recovers them in order after landing.
- Safety marshal
Holds the audience buffer, keeps the launch and landing zone sterile and reports any incursion to the pilot immediately.

Risk control
What goes wrong, and how we stop it
What can go wrong
How we prevent it
- What can go wrong
Wind on the night exceeds the platform limit and the client expects the show to fly anyway.
How we prevent itA numeric go/no-go wind figure is written into the contract, an on-site weather station logs the reading, and a contingency slot on the following night is agreed at booking.
- What can go wrong
GNSS positioning drifts and a 300-drone logo reads as a blur rather than a shape.
How we prevent itAn RTK base station on site corrects satellite error to centimetre-level, and the rehearsal flight verifies formation tightness from the actual audience viewing position.
- What can go wrong
Text in a logo or a name is unreadable because the fleet is too small for the character count.
How we prevent itCharacter legibility is calculated against fleet size and viewing distance at the design stage, and we reduce the character count or raise the drone count rather than flying something illegible.
- What can go wrong
Guests or press drift under the flight volume for a better photograph.
How we prevent itThe audience buffer is physically barricaded, safety marshals are briefed to report incursions directly to the pilot, and the pilot holds the formation until the volume is sterile.
Honest comparison
Is this the right choice for your event?
- Tethered balloon or sky-lantern effectsOur verdict
Dramatically cheaper and almost unregulated, and lovely for ambience. They cannot form a shape, cannot be synchronised to music and, in the case of lanterns, are banned or heavily restricted in many places on fire-safety grounds.
- Fireworks instead of a drone showOur verdict
Fireworks are cheaper, louder and far easier to permit in most places, and nothing matches the physical shock of a shell. Drones win on precision — logos, names, product shapes — on reusability, on noise, on smoke and on sites where open flame is forbidden. Many clients do both, with drones for the story and a short pyro finale.
- A smaller fleet to save budgetOur verdict
Sometimes correct. At 100 to 150 drones you get clean simple shapes and short text, which is plenty for a wedding reveal. It becomes a false economy when the brief includes a detailed logo or long names, because the shape simply will not resolve.
